Archives for the month of: March, 2011

I was sad that I missed seeing her show in LA last month, but turns out one piece, Madame Curie, is installed in the Jacobs Building at MCASD Downtown through June 19.  I get to go on Saturday!  All happy now.

Here’s a link to  the artists’s website with animations and installation views: http://jsteinkamp.com/quicktime/html/madame_curie1.html

There are nice stills at the ACME. website here:

My first contemporary artist was Ed Ruscha.  My dad brought him to my attention on our first museum visit together.  He liked this painting, and I didn’t forget it. You can see it surrounded by a bunch of ads here:

or you could pay a visit to the LA County Museum of Art.

He’s made a boatload of unforgettable images by now.

At the LA County Museum of Art, my first art museum, there is a beautiful net painting by Yayoi Kusama, No. C.A.9, 1960.  There is only a tiny image available online, and besides, paintings are at their best in person.  Her net paintings look kind of like these, but I urge you to take a drive. Look for the Ahmanson Building, Room 218.

The landscape is tricky but Jane Wilson is not.  Here’s a link to more images: http://www.dcmooregallery.com/wilsonj-images.htm

Here’s another artist whose work I like.

I can’t remember feeling quite so happy about a show in Santa Barbara as I am about the Charles Garabedian retrospective up now at the Santa Barbara Museum of art.  If you live anywhere near here, and especially if you don’t leave town to see art much, spend the 9 bucks and show up for the real thing.  Giant paintings, lots of works on paper, and drawings! my favorite.

All right you kids!
